More information on CSU’s Spring 2020 Virtual Commencement

CSU’s first-ever Virtual Commencement, on Saturday, May 30, at 1 p.m., will be a time for CSU graduates to gather virtually with friends and family to celebrate their achievements. The event will combine some aspects of a traditional in-person commencement ceremony with new elements to create a celebratory communal event.

Because of the large size of our graduating class, we will break down the event into separate ceremonies by school, college and, in some cases, programs/majors. All ceremonies will begin at 1 p.m. and will run concurrently. Graduates will receive an invitation and link for their ceremony that can be shared with family and friends. We’ll also share information with the broader campus community on how to view the ceremonies, which will be on YouTube. Closed captioning will be available.

CSU has partnered with StageClip to create the virtual ceremonies, and grads have been contacted and given the opportunity to upload a brief video message, photo and written message to create a personalized “grad slide.” The grad slides are edited back-to-back to create a virtual procession for each ceremony. The final day for grads to submit information is Saturday, May 23. Grads who choose not to upload personalized content will still be recognized with a grad slide that includes their name and degree.

All ceremonies will open with remarks from Provost Zhu, President Sands, Board Chair David Gunning and our commencement keynote speaker, Ohio Lt. Governor Jon Husted, plus some surprise guests. The virtual procession and recognition of students will follow the speakers. The length of each ceremony will vary based on the number of graduates.

After the ceremonies conclude, grads will have the opportunity to take part in informal Zoom “graduation parties” with their fellow students and faculty, again broken out by department, college or program. These will be great opportunities for grads to congratulate each other and interact with faculty. There will also be giveaways of CSU alumni swag. The Zoom events are being managed by each college or department, and links to join these specific events will be sent to CSU graduates the week of May 25.
