from the desk of Harlan Sands

To Our CSU Community,

Several weeks ago, we made a 5-step commitment to take a stand against racism and to turn our words into action to create real change. Today, I am writing to update you on step 1: our plans to conduct a thorough review of our Police Department to ensure our mission and purpose is clear and constituent-focused, that policies, operations and interactions with the public are of the highest standards, and that our trained officers serve as a model for others to follow.

To conduct this review, we are commissioning a CSU Police Review Task Force, co-chaired by Professor Ronnie Dunn, CSU’s Interim Chief Diversity Officer, and Lee Fisher, Dean of the CSU Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. This Task Force is made up of a cross section of individuals from CSU’s faculty, staff, and students, our greater Cleveland community, and experts in law enforcement, criminology and professional standards. The full Task Force membership can be viewed here.

The university will be partnering with 21CP Solutions, a premier national police reform consulting organization, to conduct this critical work.

I have asked the Task Force to produce a final report with findings and actionable recommendations by November 15.

Once again, I am proud to be part of a team that openly and directly welcomes opportunities to make ourselves better.
