Dear Students:

As was announced last week, CSU has added a Pass/Fail grading option for Spring Semester to all undergraduate and graduate courses, except those that require a letter grade for licensure or regulatory reasons. This policy change is designed to give students greater flexibility and less stress given the current situation.

Students can choose Pass/Fail or continue toward a traditional letter grade. Important points on Pass/Fail are listed below. For complete details of the new policy, please click here.

  • Before choosing the pass/fail option students are strongly encouraged to speak with their academic advisor.
  • The pass/fail option will appear on the student transcripts as an S (Satisfactory) or U (Unsatisfactory).
  • Students can choose the courses for which they want the S/U grades (except where a letter grade is required for licensing or regulatory reasons).
  • For undergraduate courses, a letter grade of D or better will earn a grade of S, and for graduate courses a letter grade of B- or better will earn an S. Otherwise the grade will be a U.
  • The deadline to choose the S/U option for Spring Semester is 11:59pm, Friday April 24, 2020. Students will need to complete a form and return it to the Office of the Provost by that time in order to opt-in. Information on when the form is available will be forthcoming.
  • S/U grades are not used in calculating a student’s grade point average (GPA).
  • If students are concerned about how a Pass/Fail grade may impact future graduate school admission, they should contact their academic advisor.
  • The Pass/Fail (S/U) option is different for classes in the College of Law. Please contact Associate Dean Carolyn Broering-Jacobs at c.broeringjacobs@csuohio.edu for details.

If you have questions about Pass/Fail and how it might apply to your individual situation, please contact your academic advisor.

Sincerely,

Jianping Zhu
