Classes: Remote Learning Underway

The Lead

  • CSU President Harlan Sands will hold a virtual Town Hall this Wednesday, April 1, at 1 p.m. ET, on the university’s Facebook page. President Sands will provide an update on remote learning and student support services and will answer questions from students. If you are unable to watch the event live, an archived replay will be available on the Facebook page. You can also view replays of the president’s Town Halls from March 20 and March 26.

Student Engagement and Support

  • This is a very challenging time and some students may have trouble coping as a result. The CSU Counseling Center is here to help and is open online and by phone, providing free mental health services to students. To access care, call the Counselling Center at 216-687-2277. The CSUCARE Team is also working remotely and can be reached at 216-687-2048 or by email at magnusacts@csuohio.edu.
  • Remote learning is new for many students and for some it can be a challenge to adapt and stay engaged with coursework. The Tutoring & Academic Success Center is a great resource for tutoring, coaching, supplemental instruction and other services designed to help students succeed. To access help, email tutoring@csuohio.edu or call 216-687-2012.  Also check out the Keep Learning website for resources and support services available to assist students with the transition to remote learning.

Academics

  • CSU has suspended its Academic Standing Policy for the Spring 2020 term, except in instances where licensure and regulatory considerations come in to play. This means that students whose academic performance would normally put them on academic warning, probation, or dismissal (graduate level) will not have that occur this semester, and students whose academic performance would normally progress to probation or suspension under the policy, will be given an additional semester without penalty.
  • CSU is instituting a Pass/Fail grading option to give students more flexibility in the current situation. The option is available for all undergraduate and graduate classes, except those where a letter grade is required for licensure or regulatory reasons. Students can choose Pass/Fail or work toward a traditional letter grade. Details on the Pass/Fail option will be available later this week.

For Faculty and Staff

  • As the Greater Cleveland community comes together to respond to COVID-19, requests for services, supplies or other resources are being directed to various contact points within CSU. In order to track such requests and respond in a coordinated way, we are asking faculty and staff who receive such requests to direct them to Heather Link in the Office of the President, at 216-523-7359 or heather.link@csuohio.edu.
  • Staff and faculty with questions on technology such as remote meeting solutions, migrating important files to the cloud, and other issues are encouraged to visit the Keep Working and Keep Teaching websites for a complete list of resources available to facilitate remote work and remote teaching, along with tips, how-to’s and tutorials

On Campus

  • In keeping with Ohio Governor Mike DeWine’s “Stay at Home” order, CSU campus buildings have been locked and swipe card access disabled until further notice. Only officially designated essential employees necessary for university continuity of operations will be allowed on campus. See the full announcement here. Thank you to everyone for supporting Governor DeWine’s policy and working remotely.

 New FAQs

Questions we’re receiving:

  • When will CSU resume face-to-face classes on campus?
We will follow the guidance of public health experts, the state and federal government and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to determine when to resume face-to-face classes. That guidance continues to be to stay home, practice social distancing and take other precautions to prevent the spread of the virus.  CSU will return to face-to-face instruction on campus when health experts indicate it is safe to do so.
  • When should students expect to hear about refunds of housing, meals and parking fees?
We appreciate students’ patience as the details of a process to issue pro-rated refunds for Spring Semester have been worked out. Complete information will be available in the coming days.
