The Lead

  • CSU President Harlan Sands held a live virtual Town Hall on Wednesday, July 8, at 1:00 p.m. on the university’s Facebook page, during which he discussed plans for Fall Semester and answered questions from current and incoming students. If you missed the live event, an archived replay is available on the page, along with replays of prior Town Halls.
  • On Thursday, July 9, CSU responded to a new ruling from the Department of Homeland Security concerning the immigration status of international students attending U.S. colleges and universities through online teaching and learning only. Read the university’s statement of support for our international students and actions to address their needs here.
  • Also on Thursday, July 9, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced his administration’s Restart Ohio plan for higher education for fall, 2020, that provides guidelines for Ohio’s colleges and universities to repopulate their campuses in a way that is as safe as possible. Click here to read CSU’s statement of support for the Governor’s plan and his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Yesterday, President Sands announced the commissioning of a CSU Police Review Task Force to conduct a thorough review of the CSU Police to ensure that policies, operations and interactions with the public are of the highest standards. The task force is co-chaired by Professor Ronnie Dunn, CSU’s Interim Chief Diversity Officer, and Lee Fisher, Dean of the CSU Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. The creation of the task force is part of a 5-step commitment to take action against racism that was announced in June. You can read President Sands’ message on the creation of the task force here.

Questions we are receiving

  • When will we know which fall courses will be in person and which will be through remote teaching and learning?
As noted by President Sands in his virtual Town Hall last week, CSU is targeting Friday, July 17, to have information loaded into CampusNet on which courses will be taught in person on campus and which will be through remote teaching and learning. Complete information on meeting times and classroom/space assignments will be available as soon thereafter as possible.
  • I’ve applied for on-campus housing but haven’t received a contract. Where does the process stand for on-campus housing for fall?
First, contracts are still being sent and no students have been denied housing at this time. All active applications are still in the queue, and we will send contracts for all available spaces by July 17. After that, we will offer additional contracts as we receive cancellations throughout the summer. It’s important to note that demand for on-campus housing always exceeds supply at CSU, but the COVID-19 pandemic and the need to provide students with private bedrooms, means we have fewer spaces than usual this year. Priority will be given to students with a course or courses on campus for fall, first-year/freshman students, students whose scholarships are tied to living on campus, and returning students who have already applied for on-campus housing. Students should check their CSU email regularly for updates.
  • Will face masks be required when on campus for Fall Semester?
Yes. Currently, face masks are required by order of both the City of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County, and it will also be CSU’s policy for all students, faculty and staff when on campus (indoors and out) for fall. Individuals unable to wear a face mask due to health conditions can request an accommodation. Wearing masks, together with 6 ft. physical distancing and frequent hand washing and sanitizing are among the most effective ways to stop the spread of the virus. We are in this together and we must respect and protect one another if we are to succeed in repopulating our campus safely!
